Tony Blair, who recently joined the Africa Progress Panel, joined members of the group today in Berlin to meet with Chancellor Angela Merkel at the conclusion of the German Presidency of the G8.

Speaking after their meeting with Chancellor Merkel, the Africa Progress Panel today commended Chancellor Merkel's commitment to Africa throughout 2007 and expressed their high expectations for the year ahead from all G8 leaders.

Chancellor Merkel met with Kofi Annan, Michel Camdessus, Peter Eigen, Bob Geldof and Tony Blair to discuss the outcomes of the German G8 Presidency. Speaking as Chair of the Africa Progress Panel, Kofi Annan thanked Chancellor Merkel for the dedication she has shown delivering on G8 promises this year:

"As Germany continues to work towards its agreed G8 objectives we are reminded that the only promises that matter are those that are kept. It is the responsibility of the world's leaders to maintain momentum to ensure Africa meets the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Efforts still need to be stepped up to ensure that G8 and European leaders' stated resolve to meet their commitments is matched by delivery that enables African countries to implement their development plans," said Mr Annan.

"The Chancellor has set the standard high this year. We look forward to her remaining an active champion of Africa long after the conclusion of her G8 Presidency," concluded Mr Annan.
